Items & Currencies

Every resource that powers Clash Royale progression — currencies, Wild Cards, Books, Shards and special Magic Items, and what each one does.

Clash Royale runs on a web of currencies and upgrade items. This page groups them all — the Gold and Gems you spend daily, the Wild Cards and Books that level your deck, Evolution Shards, and the rotating event currencies — with what each is used for and where it comes from.

Core Currencies

The everyday resources of Clash Royale — Gold, Gems, in-battle Elixir, Trophies and the cards themselves.

Gold

Storage is capped (historically 5,000,000). Clan donations of max-level cards now grant Gold (and Star Points) instead of card copies.

The primary progression currency. Spent to upgrade cards, buy cards and offers in the Shop, and create or join a Clan.

From: Chests and rewards · Shop (buyable with Gems) · Trophy Road & Pass Royale · Clan Wars and challenges · Masteries · Donating and requesting cards in a Clan

Gems

Removed/legacy Elite Wild Cards were auto-converted into Gems in the Nov 2024 rework.

The premium currency. Used as an optional shortcut to buy Gold, cards, chests, offers, Pass Royale and to skip timers; the only currency purchasable with real money.

From: Real-money purchase · Pass Royale · Trophy Road (one-time milestones) · Shop daily deals · Challenges, Clan Wars and Collection Level milestones

Elixir

Battle-only resource; not stored between matches. Distinct from the collectible 'Magic Coin/Elixir' shop items sometimes grouped under Magic Items.

The in-battle resource used to deploy cards. Regenerates over time during a match; players start at 5 and can hold up to 10 (double/triple Elixir modes speed regeneration).

From: Regenerates automatically during a battle

Trophies

Separate from the Ranked/Path of Legends ladder, which uses its own League/rating system rather than Trophies.

The ladder ranking score. Won or lost per 1v1 match; total Trophies advance you along Trophy Road, unlocking Arenas, cards and one-time rewards.

From: Winning ladder (Trophy Road) battles

Cards

The collectible troops, spells and buildings. Duplicate copies of a card plus Gold are spent to level that card up; owning and leveling cards drives most progression.

From: Chests · Shop purchases · Clan donations/requests and trades · Trophy Road, Pass Royale, challenges and events

Wild Cards

Universal cards, one per rarity, that convert into copies of any unlocked card of that rarity to help level it up.

Common Wild Card

Distribution to players was significantly increased in the 2026 Collection Levels update (Wild Cards moved from Mastery rewards to Collection Level milestones).

A universal Common-rarity card. Can be converted into copies of any Common card you've already unlocked, to help level it up.

From: Chests · Pass Royale · Trophy Road & Collection Level milestones · Shop offers · Events and challenges

Rare Wild Card

A universal Rare-rarity card, convertible into copies of any unlocked Rare card to level it up.

From: Chests · Pass Royale · Trophy Road & Collection Level milestones · Shop offers · Events and challenges

Epic Wild Card

A universal Epic-rarity card, convertible into copies of any unlocked Epic card to level it up.

From: Chests · Pass Royale · Trophy Road & Collection Level milestones · Shop offers · Events and challenges

Legendary Wild Card

A universal Legendary-rarity card, convertible into copies of any unlocked Legendary card to level it up.

From: Chests · Pass Royale · Shop offers · Events and challenges

Champion Wild Card

A universal Champion-rarity card, convertible into copies of any unlocked Champion card to level it up.

From: Chests · Pass Royale · Shop offers · Events and challenges

Elite Wild Card

REMOVED in the 2024-11-24 progression rework. Remaining Elite Wild Cards were converted into Gems; ones already partly spent became card copies. Elite/Level 15 upgrades now use regular Cards, Gold and Wild Cards.

Legacy universal card that was used to push cards from Level 14 toward Elite Level 15. A more passive form of progression that players found confusing.

Books

Powerful targeted upgrade items that instantly complete a single card-level upgrade.

Book of Cards

Storage is very limited (historically 1); excess is converted to Gems. Modern Books are generally rarity-agnostic 'Book of Cards' items rather than a separate book per rarity.

A powerful single-target item that instantly grants exactly the number of cards needed to level one chosen card up by one level (a stronger, targeted Wild Card).

From: Pass Royale · Shop offers · Trophy Road · Events, challenges and tournaments

Book of Books

Unverified · Legacy/rare item associated with older progression systems. Presence in the current game is intermittent; treat as historical unless a live offer shows it.

Legacy top-tier book that granted a full single-level upgrade for any card regardless of rarity. Effectively the most powerful upgrade item of its era.

From: (Legacy — special offers/events; rarely available)

Evolution Resources

Shards used to unlock and progress card Evolutions — card-specific Evolution Shards and flexible Wild Shards.

Evolution Shards

Card-specific: shards are tied to one card. Drop odds vary by source and change with updates.

The resource that unlocks a card's Evolution. Six Evolution Shards for a specific card unlock that card's evolved form.

From: Shop offers and Evolution Boxes · Pass Royale · 5-star Lucky Drops · Season Shop (via Season Tokens) · Community events and special challenges · Level Up / Collection rewards past higher King levels

Wild Shards

The flexible counterpart to card-specific Evolution Shards.

A universal evolution resource. Can be applied to any card you choose to produce Evolution Shards for it (6 shards unlock an evolution), letting you direct evolution progress.

From: Shop offers · Pass Royale (typically included) · 4-star Lucky Drops · Special challenges

Lucky Drop

Unverified · Rewards are randomized; e.g. 4-star drops can grant a Wild Shard, 5-star drops can grant Evolution Shards. Exact odds vary and change with updates.

Progression & Cosmetics

Account-wide progression systems and cosmetic currencies — Collection Level, King Tower Level, Star Points, Masteries and the removed XP.

Star Points

Applying Star Levels historically required a minimum King Level. Unchanged through the 2026 Collection Levels update.

A cosmetic currency used to apply Star Levels to maxed cards (Levels 7, 10 and 13), giving them a golden shine. Purely cosmetic — no stat effect.

From: Reaching max level on cards you already own · Donating max-level cards in a Clan · Shop, events and rewards

Collection Level

Replaced the old XP-based 'King's Journey'. Milestone rewards begin at Level 20, then every 10 levels to 1500, then every 5.

The account-wide progression metric introduced 2026-05-26. It sums every card's level (+5 per Evolution and Hero form owned); crossing Collection Level milestones grants rewards such as Gems, Wild Cards, banners, tower skins and Evolution Boxes.

From: Leveling up cards · Unlocking Evolutions and Hero forms

King Tower Level

Since the 2026-05-26 update, King Tower Level only stays the same or rises and is no longer driven by Experience/XP. Max is Level 16 (Ranked stayed capped at Level 15 until May 2026).

The level (and HP/damage) of your King Tower, and the level cap that Card Boost Potions and some features reference. Now determined by how many cards you've upgraded to given levels rather than by XP.

From: Upgrading enough cards to the required levels

Experience (XP)

REMOVED in the 2026-05-26 Collection Levels update. King Tower Level and the Collection Level system replaced the XP/King's Journey mechanic entirely.

Legacy account-progression points that raised your King Level (the old 'King's Journey'), earned by upgrading and donating cards.

From: (No longer obtainable)

Masteries

Reworked 2026-05-26: tasks made much easier, Wild Cards moved out to Collection Levels, Gem rewards removed, Gold rewards standardized (~4,000–15,000 per task).

Per-card achievement tasks that reward you for playing each card. Completing Mastery tiers grants rewards such as Gold, Gems (legacy) and other resources.

From: Using each card in battle to complete its Mastery tasks

Event & Shop Currencies

Seasonal and limited-time currencies — Season Tokens and rotating event Medals/Tickets — spent in their dedicated shops.

Season Tokens

Unverified · Tied to the seasonal Season Shop; the exact catalog rotates each season.

The Season Shop currency. Earned from battles and events during a season, then spent in the Season Shop on rewards such as Evolution Shards, cards and other resources.

From: Battles during a season · Events and challenges

Event Medals / Tickets

Unverified · Umbrella entry: names and mechanics change per event and expire when the event ends. Not a persistent currency.

Temporary event currencies (variously called Medals, Tickets or similar) earned within a specific limited-time event and spent on that event's reward track before it ends.

Items FAQ

What is the fastest way to upgrade cards in Clash Royale?

Card upgrades cost the required number of card copies plus Gold. Wild Cards substitute for copies of any card of their rarity, and Books instantly complete a single upgrade, so saving Wild Cards and Books for your most-used cards is the most efficient path.

What are Wild Cards in Clash Royale?

Wild Cards are universal cards — one per rarity (Common, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Champion). Each can be turned into copies of any card you've unlocked of that rarity, letting you top up whatever card you want to level next.

What replaced Experience (XP) in Clash Royale?

The May 2026 update removed the old XP / King's Journey system and replaced it with Collection Level, which rises as you upgrade cards. King Tower Level is now driven by how many cards you've upgraded rather than by XP.
